Chapter Six

Jingle

"I don't know if this is such a good idea." Jingle nervously rubbed her paws together in the cat carrier in the backseat of Tinsley's car.

“Well, sweetums, we don’t have much choice now, do we?” said Miss Louise calmly, cleaning between her toes.

“She’s right, kid,” said One-Eyed Willie. “Sometimes you’ve just gotta make fish pate out of cold trout.”

“I don’t understand,” Jingle replied.

Miss Louise waved her paw. "What he means is we're not always in control of what life brings us. Our job is to know what to do with what we're given."

“Oh,” said Jingle. “I suppose I never considered that before.”

“Yep, we always have choices,” said Willie. “Even when it doesn’t seem like it. For example, if I wanted to use my powers for evil right now, I could let out a howl that would blow everyone’s socks off for miles. But I like Tinsley too much to do that. And riding in the car is quite nice once you get used to it. So instead, I’ve decided to use my powers for good and not interfere with her plans.”

“But what if we don’t like Nick’s place?” asked Jingle. “What if he turns out to be a bad guy?”

“No, no,” said Louise. “You heard him at breakfast. He’s changing his ways. That’s a good thing.”

“I sure hope you’re right,” said Jingle as the SUV slowed to a stop. A few minutes later, the car door opened, and Nick lifted the carrier into his arms.

“I can’t believe I agreed to this,” he mumbled.

“I definitely owe you one,” said Tinsley as she reached into the backseat behind him to retrieve the bags of pet food and other supplies.

The ride in the carrier was a bit bumpy on the way to Nick's apartment. Jingle heard a ding followed by the swish of elevator doors opening. She felt her stomach drop as they were whisked swiftly upward. Finally, the conveyance stopped with a slight bounce, and the doors slid open again. Nick put the carrier down while he reached for the keys to his apartment. They jingled as he turned the lock. He picked the carrier back up and moved it inside. Jingle heard the door close behind them.

“Your apartment is beautiful!” exclaimed Tinsley. “I’ve never been inside this building before but wondered if it was as pretty on the inside as it is on the outside. It looks like new construction, right?”

"Yes," said Nick. "They were putting the finishing touches on the units when I came out to look for a place. I've been really happy with it overall. The only downside is that the washers and dryers are in the basement. Thankfully there's an elevator. I can't imagine going up and down five flights of stairs to do laundry."

Tinsley chuckled. “No kidding. Although I suppose you wouldn’t have to worry about joining a gym. I need to start up an exercise routine again.”

Nick opened the door to the carrier as he continued talking with Tinsley. Jingle waited for Miss Louise and One-Eyed Willie to make their way out first and then crept slowly out behind them.
